How to Make St. Patrick’s Day Jello Shots

According to legend, the green of the Irish flag represents its Catholic citizens, the orange represents its Protestant citizens and the white represents peace between them. This layered Jello shot incorporates the colors of the Irish flag along with Irish liquor for a celebration of all things Irish. Slainte!

Edit Ingredients

Servings: About 36 shots

  • 2 3-oz. (85 g) boxes lime gelatin

  • 2 3-oz. (85 g) boxes orange gelatin

  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk

  • 6 envelopes unflavored gelatin, divided

  • 2-1/4 cups water, divided

  • 1-3/4 cup Irish whiskey, divided

  • 1 cup Irish cream liqueur

  • Canned whipped cream or non-dairy whipped topping

  • Green sanding sugar or nonpareils

Edit Steps

Prepare the Green Layer

Lime gelatin and Irish whiskey combine to create the base of this Jello shot. To make taking the shot glasses in and out of the refrigerator easier, simply place the shot glasses on top of a baking sheet.

  1. Bring 1 cup of water to a boil on the stovetop in a saucepan.

  2. Remove the water from the heat and stir in the lime gelatin plus 2 envelopes of plain gelatin. Stir the gelatin with a whisk until it completely dissolves in the water.

  3. Add 1/4 cup of cold water and 3/4 cup Irish whiskey to the mixture.

  4. Whisk the ingredients until they’re well combined.

  5. Pour the green gelatin into each plastic shot glass, filling each glass 1/3 full.

  6. Refrigerate the shots for 30 minutes or until the gelatin has set.

Add the White Layer

Sweetened condensed milk and Irish cream liqueur form the creamy center. Be sure not to boil the liqueur. You don’t want to lower the alcohol content of the shot, and you don’t want the liqueur to curdle.

  1. Pour the sweetened condensed milk into a saucepan and bring it to a simmer.

  2. Stir in the Irish cream liqueur and remove the mixture from the heat.

  3. Pour 2 envelopes of gelatin into a bowl.

  4. Add 1/4 cup cold water to the gelatin and allow it to bloom.

  5. Add an additional 3/4 cup of boiling water to the gelatin mixture.

  6. Stir the mixture with a whisk until all of the gelatin dissolves.

  7. Stir the gelatin mixture into the milk mixture.

  8. Pour the white layer on top of the green layer in the shot glasses. The glasses should be 2/3 full.

  9. Refrigerate the shot glasses for an additional 30 minutes.

Add the Orange Layer

Orange gelatin and more Irish whiskey top off the shot and cap off the Irish flag design.

  1. Stir the orange gelatin, 2 envelopes of unflavored gelatin and 1 cup of boiling water together. Stir with a whisk until the mixture is well combined.

  2. Add in 1/4 cup cold water and 3/4 cup Irish whiskey, stirring until all of the gelatin has dissolved.

  3. Pour the ready mixture into the shot glasses until all of the glasses are full.

  4. Refrigerate the shots for 2 to 4 hours.

Add the Topping

This topping is optional but adds to the festive look of the shot.

  1. Remove the Jello shots from the refrigerator and place them on the countertop.

  2. Top each shot with a spray of canned whipped cream or a dollop of non-dairy whipped topping.

  3. Sprinkle the whipped cream with green sanding sugar or green nonpareils.

  4. Finished.

Edit Tips

  • You can also make a non-alcoholic version of these shots so that kids can join in the celebration. Simply replace all of the alcohol with water.

  • Serve these shots before your St. Patrick’s Day meal to help everyone get into the spirit of the celebration.
