Measuring the Child

  1. Measure the waist of the wearer. Cut the elastic 3"/7.5cm smaller than this waist measurement. The reason for the added edge is that once you tie on all the strips, the elastic will stretch out.

    • Once cut, sew the ends of the elastic together.

  2. Obtain 4-6 yards/3.6-5.4 meters of tulle for a baby or toddler size tutu. If cutting from the bolt, cut into 6"/25cm strips. Purchase 6"/25cm by 25 yard/23 meter rolls to make it easier for you. The spool is already 6"/25cm wide, so all that you have to do is cut down the length.

    • Let's say you want the tutu to be 14"/35.5cm long. Double that length to 28"/71cm and cut each strip to 28"/71cm long. You determine the length.

    • If using tulle from the bolt, the best way to cut strips is to leave the tulle folded as it came from the store, and cut it down to 6"/25cm strips so that you're cutting though multiple layers. This saves you time. Or purchase 6"/25cm by 25 yard/23 meter spools to bypass cutting the tulle into strips. You will need between 1-3 rolls. The average toddler tutu will use between 1.5 to 2.5 rolls.

    • Some strips might not come out completely even, but it really is okay once all the strips are tied on, as any mistakes can be hidden.

Making Up the No-Sew Tutu

  1. Fold the strip in half. Then bring it behind the elastic waistband to form a loop.

  2. Bring the ends of the tulle strip through the loop. Pull down to tighten. Make sure not to pull it too tightly.

  3. Continue tying slipknots or regular knots around the entire waistband. You will probably use between 40-60 strips of tulle––it all depends on waist size.

  4. And there you have a finished tutu!
